My little lady has been poorly...

It's been a scary few days here.  Felix has had a bad cough all week, which was diagnosed as a virus on Wednesday.  On Friday afternoon her breathing got much worse so we took her back to the doctors.  He sent us straight to the hospital where we spent a long and worrying evening with chest X-rays and nebulisers and antibiotics.

It turns out it was a nasty virus with possible signs of a chest infection, but fortunately she responded well to all the treatments and Saturday morning was spent running around the ward eating the nurses' Quality Street (like mother like daughter!)

We got to come home on Saturday, and have had a quiet time, so hopefully (everything crossed here) she's well on the mend now.

As you may imagine, my sewing mojo has completely left the building, but I do need to ask for some advice as I have a swap item to finish this week..

Remember my powerpoint designs?

Well, I turned the two on the left into reality...

and for my partner think I'm going to stick with the first option, the random squares in orange, green and turquoise on linen.

The only thing is, I have no ideas on how to quilt it.  I don't own any hand-quilting thread, and have never hand quilted before, so I think that's out...so machine quilting-wise..what would you do?

Without my mojo, I'm stumped so your thoughts would be very much appreciated

  1. Aww poor wee Felix and poor you too! So glad she sounds like she's on the mend now though. That must've been scary. Hugs x
As for quilting, that's like my worst subject..lol I'd definitely try drawing it out a few times. Do a quick sketch of the cushion in permenant marker then doodle quiltin lines in pencil. I'd be tempted to say some kind of lines echoing the squares? but then there's been lots of wavy line quilting, and thats top of my list to try.... Wish I could be more help honey, sorry!

  2. I am so glad that Felix is recovering! What a horrible scare for you. You will both need some quiet time! I love both cushion covers but number one is my favourite too. I have been staring at it, imagining the quilting but don't know how to describe it. Straight line quilting in 'U' shapes from the edge up to your coloured bits, occasionally around them, but never over them. and doing that all around from all four edges. (forgive me as I am pretty crap at quilting ideas and worse at describing them)

  3. Aw! I'm so sorry about Feli but it's good to hear she's getting better. Best wishes from New Jersey! I would try to strait line quilt the whole thing - spaced across 2 inches or so. I think it would give it overall a nice effect. You could also do a gridlike design - either planned or space out more.

  4. Oh Ceri, so sorry to hear about wee Felix! I'm sure that was a terrifying few days. Glad to hear she's bouncing back - kids are so resilient aren't they? Love your quilts tops. Could you just outline quilt around each square, and where you have room, perhaps 2 rows? Don't really think it needs v.much doing to it. Jxo

  5. Sorry to hear about Felix's illness - such a worry with little ones! Glad she is on the mend!

As regards your quilting for a different effect how about quilting different sized rectangles to fill up the spaces between your pieced ones and echo quilt within them!

Re the quilting... I'd probably go with crosshatcing.

  8. Aww sorry to hear about Felix hope she's feeling more chipper now? There are a lot of chest infections doing the rounds at the moment. When my mum went to the doctors after being ill for a fortnight (she never gets ill) the doctor said everyone they'd seen so far had a chest infection. She's on her second lot of antibiotics as of this morning.

  9. You poor things, must have been a terrifying experience for you all. So glad to hear Felix is on the mend - hope you get some time to relax a bit too.

I also like the idea of quilting round the squares, I don't think you need to go overboard as the design is so lovely.

  12. Aww, sorry Felix was poorly, hope she's feeling much better now. As for the quilting, does it actually have to be quilted? It looks great as it it. If it does, maybe in the ditch around the shapes?

  14. Poor Felix and poor mummy & daddy too - nothing worse than that hopeless feeling xxx

Like they all say - stay away from the squares, but don't go overboard - I don't think it needs it, lovely already!

  15. So sorry to hear Felix has been poorly - I hope she recovers soon!! How about some blocky FMQ like this http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2011/11/yellow-and-gray-quilt-quilting.html avoiding the squares of print? Whatever you choose will be fabulous - lucky partner!

  17. I found hand quilting much much easier than I had anticipated - especially if you stitch in the ditch round the shapes. Now I rather like curling up on the sofa to do some- the advantage is its portability!
